As of yesterday, I am done my fourth and last year of college. To think I'm not going back to school this September, or that I don't have to buy anymore textbooks or write anymore tests, is crazy. And exciting. I'm definitely ready to move on to the next adventure, and excited to start my "grown-up" life. With that being said, I thought I'd write
1. Beer is always a good decision. Any other type of alcoholic beverage, who knows. But my tummy likes beer, so beer it is. Especially dollar beers. My tummy (and wallet) especially like dollar beers.
2. Life is too short for shitty people. Don't waste any time on friends that put you down, or boys that you can tell aren't into you. Spending time with these people is not going to get you anywhere. Learn to recognize when someone isn't 100% in, and say goodbye.
3. Get to know your grandparents. I decided to come to school 8 hours away from home, but my grandparents were here. I never really knew them, and living in the same city gave me a great chance to spend time with them and get to know them as people, rather than the grandparents who I only saw over Christmas and Thanksgiving, when everything was chaotic.
4. I can take care of myself. Moving so far away, I had to learn to take care of myself pretty fast. And I did an alright job, I made it out alive at least. I've gotten good grades, learned how to cook, found a balance between work and fun, and kept my head on straight through all the craziness. Pretty proud of myself :)
5. Appreciating my mom. I can't even count the times I texted or called my mom to ask her a question, both little and big issues. Being so far away from her made me really appreciate her, and I can't wait to move closer to her so we can do more things together.
6. It's okay to switch programs. I started off in Photography, after taking a year off to decide what I wanted to do. After a year, and after a lot of thinking, I decided to go into General Business. I still didn't know exactly what I wanted to do, but I knew Photography wasn't for me, and Business seemed like a safe choice. So i switched into General Business. After the first semester, we all had the option to go a more specialized route. Numbers weren't my thing, so I chose Marketing. I loved it, and graduated in Spring 2014, going back in September for the Advanced Diploma. It seems like people aren't going to accept a switch, but only you know if it's the right choice, so if that's what you think is best- Go for it!
7. Public transit is bomb. With tuition at my school, we got a bus pass. Aka you get to go anywhere around the city for free. Aka you don't have to pay for a cab on the way TO the bar, just home. So many people I know here are snobs and won't take the bus. Ummm okay. You do you. I'll just be over here taking advantage of the free rides.
8. Be friends with your teachers. College is great because you actually get to know your teachers. Classes are small enough that they will know you by name, and most are willing to help you when you need it. Especially in my final year, my teachers were so helpful, and you could tell that they wanted to prepare you for the real world as best they could, many even helping you find jobs.
9. Nobody knows you better than your roommates. I lived with the same 5 girls for 2 years, and I consider them some of my closest friends. Your roommates see you at your best and your worst. They know all your annoying habits and love you anyway. I was really lucky with mine, and I know there are people out there who didn't have the experience I did so I'm grateful!
10. What I want to do with my life. It wasn't until the last semester that I really figured out with I wanted to do. I knew Marketing, but I wasn't sure as to which part of Marketing. We learned a little bit about Social Media Marketing in one class, and then ended up getting a presentation from a company whose Social Media Manager came in and talked to us, and it was the most interesting and relevant presentation all year. I was hooked on her every word, and it just made sense for me.
What was something you learned in college? Was there anything you would have done differently?
